How to Treat Depression

There have been many times in my life when I felt depressed about things not being the way I wanted them to be. Recently, I was addressing a family group member who was feeling depressed and I gave my loved one some advice from my own experiences and how I cope with depression.

Whenever I feel depressed, I perform a few of the next 7 steps to feel better about my situation (in no particular order):

1) Change your negative thoughts to positive ones - Realizing that we have a choice in almost every facet of life, we can make up your mind to change our negative thoughts to positive ones. By thinking about positive things and knowing that we have the power to make modifications in our life, depression is sure to go away.

2) Determine how you want the situation to be - Similar to having positive thoughts, we should specifically think about what we want our situation to be like. This is important because we need to be clear about what we really want in order to bring it into our lifetimes.

3) Do something positive to change your circumstances - By doing something positive that will directly impact the adverse situation, we're beginning to take action and actually cause a different effect to occur. Action is required in order to make any kind of change.

4) Plan how you will make changes to results in a different outcome - Occasionally it is important to plan the right action steps so that they're strategic and most beneficial. Failure to plan is a primary answer why some things stay the same.

5) Pray - When we pray for what we want, we're taking the focus from what is wrong to what would be right for us. This process brings want a new outcome and is a good way to stop depression, knowing that God wants the best for us and will give us the desires of our hearts.

6) Be thankful for what you have - This step can likewise be included in our prayers because we should thank Jehovah for His blessings. Being appreciative for all of the treats in our lifetimes helps us to see how blessed we really are. We should always keep in mind that the circumstance might be worse.

7) Clean Up - This works because it supplies a sense of accomplishment as we make our environment look better. In my view, mess is not an excellent thing. So when things are cleaner and more prepared, there is a sense of peacefulness. When we feel peaceful, depression is sure to stop.

The next time you feel depressed about your circumstances, take one or more of these action steps and you will stop depression dead in its track.
