Sleep apnea treatment options

Sleep apnea is a condition which induces you to stop breathing while you're endeavoring to sleep.  There are several non threatening types of sleep apnea but there are certain situations where there may be challenging health consequences and put your life in peril.  That is why it's of the utmost necessity to be administered a sleep apnea exam if you have a belief that you are hurting from this sleep condition.

There are a number of ways that you can tell if you have a sleep apnea problem, and many unfortunate people suffer from other symptoms or conditions in which sleep problems chronic.  For example ,obesity, depression, and chronic fatigue syndrome all may be caused by sleep apnea, and they will also have cotton mouth or waking up often with a panic attack.

You may also experience insomnia but the only way to know if your symptoms are being caused by sleep apnea or are perhaps the cause of your sleep apnea is to spend some time to be tested for sleep apnea.  It is standard for the test to be administered at a sleep disorder center but can also be administered at a hospital or doctor's office where overnight facilities are available.

You'll need to take a physical exam which is comprised of a physical check on your nose, throat and palate.  There should also be an interview with questions showing how you feel about your quality of sleep.  The doctors will want to have you sleep with them overnight where a record is kept of how well you sleep.

The most common recording test used during this process is the PSG or polysomnogram, which is administered in to various forms.  The first type of test is carried out overnight and consists of monitoring the following activities; your breathing, heart rate, level of oxygen in your blood and your brain level.

The second testing type involves a home monitoring version where the technician simply connects the necessary electrodes and makes it easy to monitor the patient while they are at home using a PSG.  The result that is being looked for in judging if the test is positive or negative is a factor called the RDI or respiratory disturbance index.

This expresses in numerical terms the amount of unnatural hitches which disrupted your breathing over the entire test.  The following values are usually used when deciding if someone has a sleep apnea issue.  If the total amount of interruptions over an hour is over twenty in number then the patient is usually recommended for treatment.

There are some additional examinations which may also be requested including a multiple sleep latency test that determines how much your lack of sleep is effecting you.  For a normal person, they need around 10 minutes to begin to fall asleep so individuals who can fall asleep in less than five minutes are usually recommended for treatment.  A strip test can also be administered prior to the sleep apnea test to determine if there are further tests needed.
